HOLLIS BROWN was founded by singer & guitarist Mike Montali with guitarist Jonathan Bonilla in Queens, New York, 2009. Pals since high school, the musicians cooperated as songwriters before the band was formed — with a name taken from Bob Dylan’s 1964 song “The Ballad of Hollis Brown”.
In 2018 the band signed to Mascot Records, and announced they would be releasing new album Ozone Park on June 7th 2019 via Cool Green/Mascot
The songs on the new album have musical wide-ranging appeal: with a collection of interlacing, coalescent and energizing compositions that reach from expressive soul to reverberating Americana via some muzzy hard rock. This album constitutes the attention to craftsmanship and the musical diversity that singer Mike Montali acknowledges must be born in his own musical roots.
“Growing up in Queens I fell in love with all different types of music,” Mike says, “We had hip-hop, we had funk music, we had rock ‘n’ roll music, we had singer-songwriters. Everybody in the band loves all those things, so it’s nice to try and incorporate all those things. We’re really open.”
“Do Me Right” [shared below] is a sweet-tempered, sparkling ‘n’ easy-going ride with groovy bass-bumps, a thoughtful voice and the kind of light aesthetic that’s stuffed with stylistic features you will associate with the 1980s West Coast sounds of Steely Dan or Toto.
