Laurence Made Me Cry, the nom de plume of Cardiff based multi-instrumentalist Jo Whitby, offers a special free track for download from her forthcoming debut album ‘The Diary Of Me’. The track is a collaboration with underground Cardiff-based producer/remixer  Dementio13. [CutMat Recordings.]

The collaboration proved to be very fruitful producing two versions of the song ‘Intelligent Mister Toad’ based on the diaries of Kenneth Williams. As a way to keep fans updated with the progress of the record, Jo decided to release one of the versions as a free download.

Laurence Made Me Cry’s first release ‘The Rain Song EP’, an emotive and intimate collection of folk inflected songs, was met with positive reviews across the blogosphere in 2011. There’s an odd familiarity about the music of Laurence Made Me Cry. Her songs bring with them a sense of timelessness and warmth like meeting up with an old friend. Whitby’s use of folk and rock roots combined with electronic instruments and organic sounds spawn a myriad of landscapes and pictures for the listeners’ imagination to delve into.

After rasing funds using Sponsume,   Laurence Made Me Cry is currently busy recording ‘The Diary of Me’, an album exploring the dialogue we all have with our individual inner voice, with various collaborators in and outside the UK. The songs will act as snapshots of days, experiences and thoughts in a similar way a written diary would.

Laurence Made Me Cry has now launched a teaser track ‘‘Intelligent Mister Toad’  ahead of the new album release date.

We took a listen to ‘Intelligent Mister Toad v2 (feat. Dementio13)’ and here’s what we thought:

Fragile, dusty fragments of keyboards and moth-like vocals falter and flit around a lush soundscape of trip hop melancholia. The sullen vocals evoke the charm and ethereal majesty of Beth Orton, wrapped in an abundant network of tabla infused succulence. The final steps of this joyful journey are taken in starry-eyed wonder, as the horizon opens to the listener.
