“Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” is the song by Anna Kendrick made famous by the 2012 musical comedy film ‘Pitch Perfect’ - but the song has a noble past.
“When I’m Gone” was written by A. P. Carter for the tight-harmony American folk music group ‘The Carter Family’. It was recorded in 1931. The song was later released by J. E. Mainer’s Mountaineers and by the blue-grass guitarist Charlie Monroe.
In 2009, the English band ‘Lulu and the Lampshades’ combined the song “When I’m Gone” with a common children’s game known as the “Cup Game” - in which plastic cups are tapped to create a distinct rhythm.
This created the modern version of the song known as “Cups (When I’m Gone)”. In 2011 ‘Anna Burden‘ uploaded a version of that song onto YouTube – it went viral - and the film became the inspiration for Anna Kendrick’s version.
Canadian producer/remixer Jellosea’s remix has now reached the top of the MP3 blog aggregator “Hype Machine.”
Jellosea (Toronto based Nalin De Zoysa) – said on re-mixing Cups:
“I’d have to say that it was somewhat of a happy accident. I loved the lyrics and thought I could come up with another arrangement to pull out some more emotion from them.”
The result is a dreamy, peaceful, chilled-out electronic track. Check it here:
